Hi, I’m Leslie – a Northwest Arkansas photographer and a mom myself. I know firsthand how quickly little ones grow and change, and how special it is to capture every sweet stage. With school picture day coming up, here are a few tips to help you choose the perfect outfit for your child’s school portraits – no stress required.

Keep It Simple and Comfortable

When it comes to kids, comfort always wins. Choose something soft and familiar that your child loves to wear. If they’re tugging at their shirt or fussing with a hat, it’ll show in the photos. A cozy sweater, a favorite dress, or a well-loved button-up are perfect choices.

Choose Colors That Compliment Their Sweet Faces

I always recommend colors that keep the focus on your child, not their clothes. Soft, neutral tones like cream, beige, dusty blue, sage, or blush photograph beautifully. If your child loves color, go for one main shade and skip neon or super-saturated colors (they can reflect on the skin and overpower those precious smiles).

Subtle Patterns and Texture Photograph Best

You don’t have to stick to solids! Simple patterns like thin stripes, small florals, or textured fabrics like knits or corduroy can add personality without distraction. Try to avoid large logos or characters; they tend to pull attention away from your child’s expression.

A Little Prep Goes a Long Way

  • Make sure clothes are clean, wrinkle-free, and fit comfortably. Set them out the night before.
  • For girls, a bow or headband can be a sweet touch; just make sure it doesn’t cover their eyes.
  • For boys, a quick hairbrush or trim the week before can make a big difference.
  • Avoid big, clunky shoes or bulky layers; simple is always best!

Outfit Ideas to Make It Easy

  • A soft cotton dress with knee socks or a bow.
  • Jeans or corduroy pants with a plain white T.
  • Overalls or chinos with a button-up or henley.

Some of my favorite Bentonville spots to find picture-day outfits are Bear Hollow Kids , Southern Style, and Once Upon a Child. They always have classic, comfortable styles that photograph beautifully.

Remember: These Photos Are About Them

Preschool portraits aren’t about perfection. They’re about freezing this season of life: their giggles, messy curls, shy smiles, or missing teeth. However your child shows up that morning, that’s who you’ll want to remember years from now.
