Welcoming a baby into your home is one of the most beautiful and tender seasons of life — and as your newborn photographer, I’m so honored to document it for your family. Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, this guide will help you feel calm, confident, and ready for your in-home newborn session.

1. Feed That Baby — The #1 Tip from Your Newborn Photographer
A full baby is a sleepy, content baby — and that’s exactly what we want for your session.
As a mom myself, I remember how surprising it was to learn just how often newborns need to eat. It’s so different from what a hospital schedule might suggest! But trust me: the more you “fill the tank” throughout the day, the better your baby will sleep — both during our time together and (hopefully!) at night.
As your newborn photographer, I want to reassure you that it’s completely normal for babies to need more than just a scheduled feed. I’ve walked into plenty of sessions where baby won’t settle, is gnawing at their hands or rooting — and understandably, the parents say, “But it shouldn’t be time yet!” I know it’s exhausting to feed around the clock. You’re doing an amazing job.
That’s why I always recommend aiming to be fully ready about 20 minutes before I arrive, and using that window to feed or “top off” your baby. It gives us a peaceful, cozy start to the session — and most babies are already snoozing happily by the time I walk in the door.

2. We’ll Follow the Light (Not the Mess)
You do not need to clean your entire house — promise. As your in-home newborn photographer, I naturally gravitate toward the rooms with the best natural light.
So here’s what to do: raise the blinds, pull back the curtains, and tidy just those well-lit areas. And please turn off all other lights in the home — no lamps, no overheads. Natural light is what creates that clean, dreamy feel in your images, and competing light sources can throw things off.

3. Bathtime is a Secret Weapon
A warm bath the morning of your session is such a game changer. It helps baby stay just alert enough for a great feed — and then drift into a cozy, milk-drunk nap that makes for those sleepy, snuggly newborn photos.

4. Prep Ahead of Time
If you’re still pregnant and reading this (hi, you’re amazing), the best time to book your newborn photographer is during your second or third trimester.
This gives us time to plan wardrobe, talk through details, and prep ahead — so that on the day of your session, you’re not scrambling. You can just get dressed and snuggle that baby.

5. Why I Photograph Newborns in the Morning
All of my in-home newborn sessions happen in the mornings — and there’s a reason for that!
The light is soft and dreamy, and most babies are at their sleepiest in the early hours. I know mornings can feel like a whirlwind with a new baby, but starting early truly helps us create the most peaceful, beautiful photos.

6. What to Wear (and What Baby Should Wear)
You don’t have to figure this out alone! I love to help style every client and even send wardrobe boards with curated family looks. Neutrals, soft textures, and cozy layers always photograph beautifully.
If you’ve booked a Mini Newborn Session, these are swaddle-only sessions — I bring the wraps, and we keep things beautifully simple. Please just have baby in a plain white onesie when I arrive. (No full outfits needed!)
If you’ve booked a Signature Session, we’ll plan wardrobe for the whole family — including siblings and even pets, if your session includes them. (Just a note: pets and siblings are only included in my Signature Sessions and Baby’s First Year.)

✨ Bonus Tips from Your Newborn Photographer ✨
Treat Yourself to Fresh Florals
Not necessary at all, but if you love flowers — a fresh bouquet can be a beautiful touch in your photos. I especially love white hydrangea or tulips in a soft color.
They’re lovely to layer into your space, and they’re just nice to have as you welcome your baby home. You deserve something beautiful, mama.
Book Hair + Makeup
I offer professional hair and makeup as an optional add-on to any session — and every mom who does it tells me how glad they were.
Your newborn session is often the first time you’ll “get ready” post-baby, and it’s such a treat to have someone come to you and do it for you. I work with Paige from @ghlambeauty_ — she’s truly the best.

You’ve got this, mama.
